P e g
AGENT CARTER

BACKGROUND

Growing up in the 20s and 30s could tremendously shape a young woman, especially when viewing it through contemporary standards. Peggy was always (and still is) being told to behave like a lady and pursue a safe future with a fertile husband. There were many of these voices trying to shove their way into her consciousness, yet only one voice was encouraging her to stay true to her wants and desires, and that voice was her brother, Michael.

It seems a little banal to start off this section with a statement basically claiming that it was a man who made Peggy the woman she is today, but that's not the entire story.

Peggy was always dreaming big and seeking adventure, but as time went on, societal pressures began to successfully dim that craving for a greater purpose, and it took a visit from Michael, his verbal reminders on who Peggy Carter is, and his subsequent death, to re-awaken that Peggy Carter spirit. At the time, she was engaged to be married and had the most perfect boring life set in stone, but she traded that ring in for the job opportunity of a lifetime with a British espionage agency (coming recommended by her brother), and that holds a lot more weight to it when you consider the fact that she did this in 1940.

Though it took a little while for her to finally come to terms with it, Peggy Carter is a fighter, and that's a trait that only grows more prominent with time. Working for the SOE did a lot of good for Peggy. They began recruiting women knowing full-well they would be wildly underestimated, and she learned how to use that to her advantage. All of that talk about "being a lady" was finally being put to good use there, and her resourcefulness really blossomed into a strength that she is now known for.

Her exceptional work with the SOE promoted her to America where she joined the SSR. She really sought out the approval and acceptance of her co-workers and employers then — all of whom were viewed as her superiors simply due to the fact that they were all men. Peggy wasn't wholly aware of it at the time, but in a way she, too, viewed them as superior to her, and this subconsciously fueled her need to gain their respect. This was something she struggled with for several years, and it only made her grow more and more frustrated, making her more vulnerable to any mention of her association with Captain America — a man who respected and trusted her from the start, up unto his alleged death. A man she never felt the need to prove herself to.

It took until the end of season 1 of Agent Carter for Peggy to really know her worth. This realization freed her from the need to be respected by the men in her workplace — so much so that she watched as yet another man took credit for her work in saving the day and shrugged it off like it was nothing of concern. This time, it finally really wasn't, because she knew that trusting her instincts, her drive, and her talents was what got the job done, and getting the job done matters more to her than a pat on the back. This newfound confidence ignited something in Peggy, and she went from letting words of belittlement bounce off of her to actually absorbing them and throwing them right back twice as hard. No more could she be silenced, and being stepped on was out of the question.

And though she would never undermine someone's abilities or be foolish enough to be the one doing the underestimating, treating those around her as though they are soldiers does come with its disadvantages. Peggy believes in the people by her side, she trusts them with her life, but if something were to go so wrong on a mission that any one of them became injured (or worse), she'd only blame herself. This makes it difficult for her to be close to anyone, especially on an intimate level, as she fears it'd only go south for those involved. All this on top of her struggle to express her softer side, since it has only ever been used against her in the past (women are, like, way too emotional, man). Though, this more mild side to Peggy has proven to be something of a comedic experience (through an audience's perspective), and it'd be the only time she can be found with her head down, her gaze fixed on her shoes, and her fingers fidgeting with one of her earrings.

The beauty about Peggy is that everything she is now she always has been. The difference lies within the potency of those characteristics, and both the good and the flawed seem to shine more as she slowly peels away that patriarchal-coated layer that has tried its damnedest to mold itself onto her all these years.

TIMELINE

The timeline below was organized entirely by the mun with each piece of information being taken from canon. It's worth noting that some of Peggy's 'technically-scrapped' history in the MCU contradicts what has been shown or stated in Agent Carter, which is where her canon loyalty lies. I have taken a few bits of information from canon sources outside of the TV show, but anything that contradicts the background Agent Carter built for the character has been taken out and will be ignored entirely.

Tildes that replace the year mark an event that happened somewhere between the years listed.

ABILITIES

Peggy is completely and totally mortal. No immunities or superpowers, but she does come with an impressive list of abilities that extend upon themselves, rendering them seemingly endless. But let's just make a short and sweet list, shall we?

PHYSICAL
• She is proficient in hand-to-hand combat, being highly skilled in martial arts.
• An expert marksman trained in all sorts of weaponry — this includes anything within her reach, a wide variety of firearms, and even tranquilizer guns.
• Peg can be a thief when it's necessary: she is able to pickpocket items without anyone noticing.

MENTAL
• Resourceful and creative chemist.
• Expert tactician.
• Master codebreaker - she's so good that it actually bores her now.
• Multilingual: outside of her mother tongue she is fluent (reading and writing) in Russian and German.
• Incredibly intuitive and is well-versed in too many fields of psychology to list.
• Her talents positively shine with her investigative and espionage work.

Death: No.
Mind-reading: Yes.
↪ I ask that you please give me a heads-up. In my experience with mind-reading in RP, I find that it works best when both sides are working together. Especially if one - or both - is not familiar with the character(s) in question.
Manipulation: Yes.
↪ Same as the above note!

OOC
Backtagging: Yes. A must.
Threadhopping: Please, yes! If the thread isn't locked it's free to hop.
Recognized by CRAU characters?: Sure!
Off-limits: Sexual assault, non-fantastic racism, and basically any unfortunate pieces of real life that are aggressively not fun to play out.
Note: Peggy is being taken from 1947 America and is more than familiar with sexism. I don't mind a little bit of that type of interaction, but I wouldn't want to play out an entire scene focused on that. Just enough for Peggy to end it with a quick comeback or so.
